We Are Becoming Like Christ
ABOUT US
from Bethel Lutheran Church
Our Pastor the Rev. H. Brett Collins and Mrs. Amy Collins
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Out of two, we became one. Today, we continue to be blessed and share God's word with all people, continuing to be disciples in His name. With God's love and support, we will continue to grow and have everlasting life.
The exact date of the founding of Bethel Church is unknown. Early records indicate that a German colony settled along the Saluda River and Broad River in the mid 1700's. One group settled along the High Hill Creek which emptied into the Saluda River. This group organized a church called Bethel. The date, 1762, has been agreed upon as the founding date of Bethel.
Many places of worship were constucted for this congregation, with the last being built where Lake Murray is today. When constuction of the lake began, it forced the congregation to relocate.
Another church, Mount Vernon, was organized in White Rock in 1893. At the time of relocation of Bethel, the two congregations decided to merge as one.
The merger became effective in 1928 and Bethel Lutheran Church was completed in 1930.
A group of the German speaking congregation decided that they wanted to worship in English, so they created a new congregation - Saint Michael's.
In 1817, Bethel had both German and English services and then, in 1822, all services changed to the English language.
